The Science of Rainbows

Have you ever seen a rainbow and wondered how it got there? Rainbows appear when sunlight passes through tiny drops of water left in the sky after rain. When the sunlight enters these drops, it bends and splits into different colors—red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.

Each color bends slightly differently, creating the beautiful arc we see. Rainbows often appear in the morning or late afternoon when the sun is lower in the sky.
Did you know you can create your own rainbow? All you need is a glass of water and a flashlight. Shine the light through the water, and you’ll see rainbow colors on the wall!

Keep looking to the sky—you never know when a rainbow will appear to brighten your day!
